They welcome that President Outtara can now resume all his responsibilities as Head of State. On Monday, Laurent Gbagbo, who had refused to hand over power following the November election, finally surrendered.

The members of the Security Council also welcomed President Outtara’s commitment to investigate alleged human rights abuses and reaffirmed that those responsible must be held accountable, regardless of affiliation.

Ambassador Nestor Osorio of Colombia is the President of the Security Council for April.

“They encourage President Ouattara to form an inclusive, road-based government. The members of the Security Council urge all Ivorians to abstain from any reprisals, revenge and provocation, to exercise maximum restraint and to work together to promote national reconciliation and restore sustainable peace through dialogue and consultation.”

Osorio says the Security Council is concerned about reports of widespread violence and intimidation in Abidjan and is urging those involved to stop and hand over their arms to the relevant authorities.
