The Security Council is meeting today to discuss a draft resolution regarding the situation in the country.

A report from the Secretary-General highlights a deteriorating security situation in Western Sahara resulting from the absence of a peace agreement between Morocco and the Frente Polisario.

The South African Ambassador to the UN, Baso Sangqu says reports of human rights violations must be looked into.

“Given what is happening in North Africa and the Middle East and the matter in which the Security Council has responded, we believe that it is important that we apply the same standards to all the situations of human rights that are on the agenda of the Security Council.”

The Security Council is also discussing the sanctions on Côte d’Ivoire and the situation in Yemen.
