The Secretary General made the appeal during a visit to a children’s rehabilitation centre in Moscow as he began his visit to Russia.

He pointed out that there are more than half a million people living with disabilities in Russia.

“Children with disabilities, they are facing a lot of problems, stigma, discrimination and isolation. I commend the Russian Government, which has signed the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. I would like to urge the Russian Government to ratify it as soon as possible so that they can join the international community – there are more than 99 countries which have ratified this Convention.”
