Nearly 1,000 more migrants stranded rescued from Misrata

Close to 1,000 more people have been rescued from Misrata, while heavy fighting continues in the Libyan town.

Migrants stranded

The group, including over 650 migrants from Ghana, left the port city Monday morning on a boat chartered by the International Organization for Migration (IOM).

The IOM’s Jemini Pandya says many were stuck there, living out in the open for weeks, under terrible conditions.

“On the boat out of the 971 people that we evacuated there are 100 Libyans, 23 of whom were wounded, including a child shot in the face and an amputee.”

This is the third evacuation the IOM has conducted and the agency says it’s running out of money to help the thousand more stuck there. The UN ahs been appealing for $310 million dollars, but has only gotten les than half of that.
