Ms. Pillay is calling for an independent inquiry into the incident in the camp in Iraq in which dozens of people were killed and injured.

Derrick Mbatha reports.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Navi Pillay says that the full details of what exactly happened at Ashraf Camp on the morning of 8 April are still only beginning to emerge.

At least 34 people died and dozens of others were injured, when Iraqi soldiers entered the camp.

Ms. Pillay says most of the people were shot and some appear to have been crushed to death, presumably by vehicles.

She is appealing to other governments to provide a long-term solution for the residents of the camp who belong to the People’s Mujahadeen of Iran fighting against the Iranian government.
