•Former President Laurent Gbagbo has finally surrendered to forces loyal to President Alassane Ouattara of Côte d’Ivoire. This came after almost four months of a standoff between forces loyal to the two men as Mr. Gbagbo refused to concede defeat in last year’s election.

•Africa is making progress in its efforts to promote development. The 2008 and 2009 global economic crisis interrupted economic growth on the continent which was at a rate of 5 per cent over a ten year period. Colin Bruce of the World Bank says a strategy is being devised to speed up economic growth on the continent.

•A polio immunization campaign is going on in Southern Sudan. This is in response to the recent outbreak of the disease in bordering countries. UNICEF’s polio immunization specialist Jalaa Abdelwahab says the campaign is part of the efforts to stop polio transmission in the entire world by 2012.
