Each year, 337 million people are victims of work accidents and more than two million die because of occupational injuries or work-related diseases.

The ILO‘s Juan Somavia said it was tragic given that so many accidents, and deaths could be prevented with appropriate managerial measures.

He added that new challenges to work safety include risks associated with chemicals and bio-technologies.

Psychological risks associated with work pressures are also on the rise.

Mr Somavia made the comments on World Day for Safety and Health at Work which is observed each year on the 28th of April.
