The request to hold the special session on the Human rights situation in Syria was made by the United States and supported by 16 member states of the council mostly from the European Union.

The special session to be held on Friday comes amid growing concern over the violent crackdown of anti government protests, in which hundreds have been reported killed allegedly by Syrian security forces.

The UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon has condemned the violence and urged the Syrian authorities to end the bloodshed against protesters calling for change.

Mr Ban has called for an independent investigation into the killing of protesters.

Yesterday, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights said over 100 people were killed during anti-government protests in several Syrian cities over the weekend.

The High Commissioner said the government response to the demonstrations was unacceptable.
