France wants to make sure that Côte d’Ivoire’s Laurent Gbagbo is held accountable for any crimes he may have committed.

Gbagbo finally surrendered on Monday, following his attempt to cling to power through deadly violence. The former leader lost in the presidential election in November, but had refused to hand over power to Alassane Ouattara.

France has been playing an instrumental role in the ongoing situation in the West African nation, along with the UN Mission to Côte d’Ivoire (UNOCI).

Julie Walker asked Stéphane Crouzat, the spokesman for French Mission to the UN, what’s next for Côte d’Ivoire and for its former leader Gbagbo.
