Fighting in Côte d’Ivoire takes a new turn

The situation in Côte d’Ivoire has taken a new turn as Republican Forces loyal to Alassane Ouattara, the recognized winner of last year’s run-off presidential election, surrounded the palace of his rival Laurent Gbagbo. Mr. Gbagbo has refused to leave office and allow President Ouattara to take over. After diplomatic efforts to resolve the crisis failed, Republican Forces moved to take cities from pro-Gbagbo forces. Maha Fayek spoke to the head of the United Nations mission in Côte d’Ivoire, Y.J. Choi about the current situation.
