Experts named to investigate human rights violations in Côte d’Ivoire

Three legal experts who will investigate allegations of human rights abuses in Côte d'Ivoire have been named by the UN Human Rights Council.

The commission of inquiry was set up by the council to investigate allegations following the November presidential elections.

Prof Vitit Muntabhorn, from Thailand who previously served as the UN Special Rapporteur on human rights in North Korea. will lead the commission.

Cedric Sapey is from the Human Rights Council.

“The International Commission of Inquiry should investigate the facts and circumstances surrounding the allegations of serious abuses and violations of human rights committed in Cote d’Ivoire following the presidential election of 28 November 2010, in order to identify those responsible for such acts and bring them to justice and to present its findings to the council.”

Other members of the commission of Inquiry include Suliman Baldo, a conflict resolution expert from Sudan and Ms Reine Alapini Gansou a lawyer from Benin.

The commission is expected to present its findings to the council at its next session in June 2011.
