West Africa’s economic recovery is being threatened by the prolonged political crisis in Côte d’Ivoire according to the International Monetary Fund. Incumbent Laurent Gbagbo refuses to relinquish power to the internationally recognized President Alassane Ouattara. The economic impact of the crisis is being felt most keenly by the members of the West African Economic and Monetary Union. WAEMU is the organization of eight West African states established to promote economic integration and which among them, share the CFA franc as a common currency. Earlier this year, an IMF team visited the region and warned that without a rapid and peaceful solution in Côte d’Ivoire, the region’s recovery could be severely hit. Hyun-Sung Khang spoke with the IMF’s Norbert Funke about the situation.
