Consolidating progress in Haiti

Security Council Chamber

A high level Security Council meeting was held April 6th to discuss reconstruction in Haiti. Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos, whose country holds the council presidency for the month, chaired the meeting. Haiti’s reconstruction following the 2010 earthquake was the issue Colombia chose to highlight. Haiti has made gains in security, respect for basic freedoms and an end to state-sponsored violence, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon told a meeting of the Security Council on Haiti. He commented the Haitian people for these gains as well as for a peaceful presidential election, progress in clearing the rubble left by the earthquake of 2010 and gains made in cholera reduction. But, said the Secretary-General, the country’s economy is on its knees.
