“Chilling effect” on right to freedom of expression in Algeria

The people of Algeria should be guaranteed the right to freedom of expression and access to information as part of ongoing political reforms

According to an independent UN expert.

The country has largely escaped the protests which lead to intense fighting in neighbouring Libya, by promising change.

Frank La Rue, who just got back from a weeklong visit to the country, says part of that change needs to include decriminalizing defamation.

The Special Rapporteur says it has “a chilling effect” on the right to freedom of opinion especially for journalists in Algeria.
