Angelina Jolie visits refugee camp

Hollywood actress and United Nations Goodwill Ambassador Angelina Jolie traveled to the Tunisian-Libyan border on April 5. Jolie visited the Choucha transit camp where she spoke with migrant families who had fled the fighting in Libya. Jolie highlighted the need for greater international support for those affected by the crisis. She also pushed for greater humanitarian access to the country.

Raising awareness about Autism

Research suggests autism affects approximately 67 million people worldwide Autistic spectrum disorder affects the brain’s development of social and communication skills, and generally appears during the first three years of life, mainly in boys. In 2007, the United Nations General Assembly declared April 2 World Autism Awareness Day. One of the people instrumental in that was the co-founder of the organization Autism Speaks, Suzanne Wright.

Promoting marriage and family

The Holy Sea Mission to the UN, which represents Pope Benedict XVI and the Catholic Church hosted a panel discussion on “Secure human development: Marriage, family, community”. The event was a precursor to the upcoming 44th session on the UN Commission on Population and Development, which will debate fertility, reproductive health and development. Wendy Wright, the President of the public policy group “Concerned Women for America” says the family is the backbone of society.
