Yemeni journalist shot and killed in pro-democracy protests

A Yemeni journalist who was shot in Sana'a, the capital of Yemen on 18 March has died.

Jamal Ahmed al-Sharabi was shot when gunmen opened fire on protesters in Change Square where a number of pro-democracy demonstrators were killed.

According to the International Press Institute, the journalist, Jamal Ahmed Al-Sharabi, was covering the demonstration for the independent newspaper, Al-Masdar, when he was shot.

Irina Bokova, the head of the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) said his killing is an attack on the Yemeni people’s freedom of expression.

Ms. Bokova stressed that it is the duty of the authorities to ensure that journalists are able to safely carry out their duties.

She urged the authorities to thoroughly investigate the circumstances of the death of Mr. Al Sharabi and to bring the perpetrators to justice.
