• World Tuberculosis Day is observed on 24 March to raise awareness about the lung disease that can be successfully treated if diagnosed on time. The World Health Organization estimates that there are about 440,000 cases of TB each year. The multi-drug resistant strain of TB is a serious problem in some countries in Africa which don’t have the equipment and trained personnel to diagnose it.

•Relief agencies are expressing great concern about the worsening humanitarian situation in Libya. Coalition forces led by the United States have bombed targets in Libya to enforce a no-fly zone imposed by the Security Council last week.

•Mali’s ancient art has been plundered from archaeological sites to be sold in Europe and the United States. A UNESCO convention prohibits trafficking in cultural property. The Director of the National Museum of Mali, Dr. Samuel Sidibé, says that measures are being taken to protect the country’s artefacts.
