WHO releases list of medicines to save mothers and children

The first ever list of the most vital medicines for saving the lives of mothers and children has been released by the World Health Organization.

It’s hoped the list will ensure the availability of the drugs in developing countries.

The top 30 medicines include a drug used to treat severe bleeding after childbirth, which is the leading cause of maternal death.

Simple antibiotics to treat pneumonia, which kill an estimated 1.6 million children under the age of five every year, are also on the list.

As are high blood pressure medicines and drugs for treating sexually transmitted infections.

The WHO says most of these medicines are not available where they are most needed.
