Violence against journalists in Libya condemned

The reported torture of a team of three BBC journalists in Libya has been condemned by the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Navi Pillay.

The journalists were detained and possibly tortured on Monday as they sought to cover fighting between insurgents and forces loyal to Libyan leader Muammar Qadhafi in the western Libyan city of Zawiya.

They were reportedly beaten and subjected to mock executions by members of the Libyan army and secret police.

Ms. Pillay says that journalists take great risks to give an accurate picture of what is happening in conflict zones.
