Vietnam needs human rights-based approach to development

Vietnam needs a human rights-based approach to developing as it grapples with the debt problem and the impact of the global economic downturn.

That’s the conclusion of the United Nations independent expert on foreign debt and human rights, Cephas Lumina, who has just completed a nine-day visit to the country.

While commending Vietnam for places citizens at the centre of national development, he called for more transparency and accountability in the management and use of public resources.

Mr. Lamina urged the government of Vietnam to ensure broad availability of accurate and timely information on, among other things, debt and the Foreign Development aid.
