UN nuclear agency offers support to earthquake-hit Japan

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has offered support to Japan to secure its nuclear facilities following the massive earthquake that has hit the country.

A state of alert has been declared by Japan’s Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency at Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant which has been shut down.

The IAEA has been informed by Japanese authorities that a state of alert has been declared at Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant.

A leak of radiation has not been detected but the plant has been shut down as a precautionary measure

The authorities also reported a fire at the Onagawa nuclear power plant which has been extinguished.

It is estimated that nuclear power provides over 30 per cent of Japan’s electricity.
