•Nearly 2,000 Tunisians landed on the Italian island of Lampedusa on Tuesday, bringing the total number of Tunisian migrants in Italy to 10,000 since mid-January. The huge numbers of migrants are putting a strain on the small island, overcrowding its sole reception centre. Frederico Fossi, UNHCR spokesperson in Rome, says the majority of the migrants are looking for better job
opportunities.

•After completing the first 100 days in office, the Somali Transitional Federal Government says it is saving lives. A new lean cabinet was appointed last October. Its first priority was to create a secure environment in which the government could operate.

South African high school student discovers passion for diplomacy

•A team of South African high school students won in Model United Nations debate competitions. Their success took them to an international competition at Cornell University in the United States in March. Samantha Dladla, a member of the team, says these debates have made her interested in diplomacy.
