Transit centre for people fleeing Libya expanded in Tunisia

A transit centre for people fleeing violence in Libya is being expanded by the United Nations refugee agency (UNHCR) at the Libya-Tunisia border area.

UNHCR and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) are urgently appealing to governments to help evacuate tens of thousands of Egyptians and other third country nationals who are on the run.

Firas Kayal, UNHCR spokesperson at the Libya-Tunisia border says that on Tuesday approximately 8,000 people fled Libya and spent the night in the UNHCR transit centre.

“Now we in UNHCR have established a transit centre that receives up to 10,000 persons and we will increase its capacity to 20,000 persons. Now we are flying in more planes carry humanitarian assistance in order to expand our capacity at the transit centre and in order to provide these people with shelter before they actually are evacuated back to their country.”
