Large numbers of Sub-Saharan Africans have managed to escape across Libya's borders in an attempt to return home.

Migrants Fleeing Violence in Libya

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) is continuing its large-scale operation to help tens of thousands of migrants fleeing violence in Libya.

The agency is evacuating Africans from Nigeria, Ghana, Mali, Mauritania, Guinea, Senegal, Togo, Sierra Leone, Benin and Cameroon.

IOM spokesman Jumbe Omari Jumbe is at a transit camp in Tunisia near the border with Libya.

“Over the past few days we have received 1,390 Ghanaians and about 380 Nigerians and the largest group still Sudanese and the Malians. But we have succeeded to organize flights to Accra and Bamako as well as to Nigeria. At the time I am talking now there are hardly any Nigerians around. There are only eight Nigerians.”
