The Somali transitional government or TGF has re-captured three strategic areas in its capital Mogadishu after two weeks of heavy fighting with the help of African Union troops.

More than 40 Burundian peacekeepers were killed in the clashes in the Al Shabaab rebel strongholds.

The government troops with the help of the African Union troops are now in control of a large part of the capital.

The UN special envoy to Somalia, Augustine Mahiga was recently in Mogadishu.

He discussed the security situation following the successful military campaign as well as the end of the transition period of the Somali government.
