Casualties suffered by African peacekeepers in their latest offensive against the Al Shabaab insurgents in the Somali capital Mogadishu might have been minimized if they had more military equipment.

That’s what the top United Nations envoy for Somalia, Augustine Mahiga has said in Nairobi, Kenya, after his recent mission to Somalia.

He said that African peacekeepers, supporting the transitional government of Somalia, have launched a successful campaign in the past two weeks and captured three strategic areas in Mogadishu.

Ambassador Mahiga said that government forces and those of the African Union mission, AMISOM have extended the parameters of the territory they control.

“Understandably in that campaign there were significant casualties on the part of the AMISOM troops, especially the Burundi contingent, but those casualties might have been minimized if they had some enablers like helicopters to provide them with advance intelligence and also to intercept the re-supply of Al-Shabaab to their forces in Mogadishu.”
