Gbagbo has refused to hand over power to the internationally recognized President Alassane Ouattara, winner of the November election.

Meanwhile, fighting in the country continues. Hamadoun Touré, the spokesperson for the UN Mission in Côte d’Ivoire (UNOCI) says forces loyal to Ouattara have taken over some towns that were previously held by Gbagbo.

“Cities have been falling to the Republic Forces for the last, I would say, 48 hours. So it has been very rapid. It seems to be smooth or smoother than expected and we are following it up very closely.”
