Opium production still a serious problem in Afghanistan

Opium remains a serious problem in parts of Afghanistan, with more farmers growing the seeds for use in making heroin.

But, Dr. Zahir Tanin, the Afghan Ambassador to the UN says production has dropped in areas of the country that are stable and secure.

“We succeeded in reducing the areas of production in the country but where the situations are not stable, it’s still a problem. There are unstable small places in terms of looking into all of Afghan provinces where they produce a big amount of opium.”

Ambassador Tanin says that as Afghanistan moves toward development and stability, the dependency of opium will decrease.

The UN has called for more money to be spent and effort to be put into fighting the illicit drug business.
