Migrants evacuated from Libya

IOM agency says that priority is being given to about 200 particularly vulnerable migrants, mostly women, children and those in need of medical assistance.

The agency has identified approximately 5,500 migrants in various locations at the port and the surrounding warehouses, mostly from Bangladesh, India and Sudan.

IOM spokesman Jean Philippe Chauzy is at the Libya-Tunisia border.

“During the day we have been moving people away from the border region, first to a transit centre camp which is about 8 kilometres down the road. We have also been organizing the humanitarian evacuation programme out of Jeba in Tunisia by air. For the first time our teams in Benghazi in eastern Libya have been able to organize an evacuation by sea for thousands of migrant workers who are in the eastern part of the country in Benghazi.”
