Messenger of Peace Michael Douglas sends condolences to Japan
Japan continues to deal with the aftermath of that 9.0 magnitude earthquake and tsunami that devastated the country on March 11th. Actor and UN Messenger of Peace Michael Douglas sat down with Julie Walker at UN headquarters in New York to discuss the situation there as well as other topics pertaining to the region.
Leprosy no longer public health threat in Timor-Leste
Leprosy, a chronic disease once endemic in South East Asia, has been largely eliminated from Timor-Leste. The disease has caused the disfigurement of millions of people, mainly in the developing world. The news was officially broken by the Timorese President José Ramos Horta, and confirmed by the World Health Organization.
Celebrating the Persian New Year at the UN
Norooz, the Persian New Year began on March 21st. It marks the first day of spring and the beginning of the year in the Iranian calendar. In 2010, the UN General Assembly recognized the International Day of Norooz, describing it a spring festival of Persian origin which has been celebrated for over 3,000 years. A special concert was held at UN headquarters in New York to mark the occasion.
