Hundreds of people are reported to have been killed.

The earthquake which is thought to be the most powerful ever to hit Japan has caused widespread damage in the earthquake zone about 250 miles north-east of Tokyo.

Japanese officials have declared a state of emergency at a nuclear power plant but there are no reports of radiation leaks.

The Secretary-General says the United Nations will be watching closely as the aftershocks are felt across the Pacific and Southeast Asia throughout the day.
