Briefing the Council on the situation in Libya, he said from the start of the crisis in the North African country, the United Nations has engaged in “strong diplomatic efforts.”

Mr. Ban told the Council that he has been in touch with all parties, including Libyan authorities.

“Libyan authorities have repeatedly claimed that they have instituted a ceasefire, including in a call to me by the Prime Minister on 19 March. We see no evidence that is the case. To the contrary, fierce battles continue in or around the cities of Ajdabiya, Misratah and Zitan, among others.”
