Libya: Concerns grow over protection of civilians

Concerns over the protection of civilians in Libya are growing at the United Nations as the North African country grapples with a political crisis and an armed rebellion.

Spokesman Martin Nesirky

Many civilians in Libya have been caught in the crossfire in the fighting between forces loyal to Libyan leader Muammar Qadhafi and rebel fighters.
United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon spoke to member states about his recent travels to Egypt and Tunisia and his diplomatic efforts concerning Libya.

United Nations spokesman Martin Nesirky has more.

“Despite repeated claims by the Libyan authorities, we continue to see no evidence of a cease-fire, nor any steps by the Libyan authorities to fulfil their obligations under resolutions 1970 and 1973. We continue to have serious concerns about the protection of civilians and respect for human rights and international humanitarian law, and we continue to stress the urgent need for humanitarian access.”
