Journalists in North Africa and Middle East harassed

Harassment and detention of journalists reporting on popular uprisings in North Africa and the Middle East must stop.

That’s the message from the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights in Geneva.

Navi Pillay expressed concern about the Yemeni government’s decision to deport two Al Jazeera correspondents on Saturday.

Rupert Colville is the spokesman for the UN human rights chief.

“We have seen a lot of suppression of the freedom of expression in the region, a lot of pressure on journalists, and harassment of journalists, detention of journalists and we remind governments of the need to protect the fundamental right of freedom of expression even in unstable times. And we are also concerned about the Al Jazeera crew which is being held by the government in Libya, and we urge their immediate release.”
