Japanese nuclear operators stabilize reactors

Japanese nuclear operators have stabilized the reactors in nuclear plants damaged by last Friday's massive earthquake and tsunami, according to the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency, IAEA.

Yukiya Amano

Briefing the press on the aftermath of the disaster, Yukiya Amano told reporters that the release of radio active material from nuclear reactors has been minimal.

He gave this assessment of the current situation.

“The entire island of Honshu has been shifted 2-1/2 metres. Affected reactors have been shut down automatically. Despite the hydrogen explosions, reactor vessels and primary containment vessels – these are designed to prevent the massive release of radioactivity – stay intact. As a result, the release of radioactivity is limited.”
