That’s the message being echoed at events around the globe as women still lag behind men in everything from equal pay to access to education.

Academy Award winning actress Geena Davis, who runs an organization that advocates for gender balance in the entertainment industry says change needs to start there.

“Children need to see an abundance of female characters of every kind occupying the space that is rightfully there’s if they see t they can be it. Media can create positive opportunities top overcome social and cultural barriers and discrimination. If children can grow up seeing women in all kinds of leadership positions it will break the stereotype.”

David made her comments at a UN forum on “Investing in women and entrepreneurship”.

March 8th was designated as International Women’s Day by the United Nations in 1975.
