Humanitarian situation worsens in Côte d'Ivoire; OCHA will increase presence

There has been political and social unrest in the West African country of Côte d’Ivoire since the disputed elections of November 2010.

Incumbent President Laurent Gbagbo refuses to cede power to Alassane Ouattara, the internationally-agreed winner.

With large numbers of people being displaced and others having to flee because of the fighting, the humanitarian situation in Côte d’Ivoire remains serious, says UN Humanitarian Coordinator Valerie Amos.

Although the ability to operate within Côte d’Ivoire is hampered by security issues, Ms. Amos told Patrick Maigua that the UN humanitarian agency, OCHA, is not leaving, but increasing its presence in the country.
