Former Rwandan mayor gets life in prison for genocide

A former Rwandan mayor has been sentenced to life in prison for his role in the 1994 genocide in the country.

Jean-Baptiste Gatete was found guilty by the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR), of the massacre of hundreds, if not thousands of Tutsis.

800,000 Rwandans were killed during the genocide.

The ICTR, based in the Tanzanian town of Arusha, is prosecuting people responsible for genocide and other serious violations of international humanitarian law committed in Rwanda.
