Civilians in Côte d'Ivoire

Fighting is continuing in Côte d’Ivoire where forces loyal to Alassane Ouattara are reported to be taking towns from pro-Laurent Gbagbo forces.

Incumbent President Laurent Gbagbo continues to refuse to concede defeat in last year’s presidential elections to internationally recognized winner of the elections, President Ouattara.

Meanwhile, the political crisis has forced thousands of people to flee their homes and others to cross to Liberia.

In New York, the Security Council unanimously adopted a resolution calling for further sanctions against Côte d’Ivoire’s Laurent Gbagbo, to force him to give up power.

To get an update on the situation on the ground, Derrick Mbatha spoke with Hamadoun Touré, the spokesman for the United Nations Mission in Côte d’Ivoire.
