Thuthuzela — this word from the Zulu language which can be translated as “comfort” – evokes feelings of warmth, freedom from emotional and physical concerns; of safety and security. Those feelings are exactly what Thuthuzela Care Centers strive to restore among people in South Africa who have been raped. Both men and women who have been violated can receive comfort at any of the more than 25 Thuthuzela centers that exist in South Africa. I recently spoke to Thoko Majokweni, who is head of the Sexual Offences and Community Affairs Unit in South Africa, where Thuthuzela centers can be found.
