Ban signs global petition to abolish nuclear weapons

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has added his name to a petition that has been signed by one million people calling for the abolition of nuclear weapons.

The signing was done at a ceremony in New York to inaugurate a new exhibit inspired by “Mayors for Peace” who campaign against nuclear weapons.

The event was attended by survivors of the atomic bomb attack on Japan towards the end of the Second World War, known as the Hibakusha.

“Together we can rid the world of nuclear weapons and answer the call of these Hibakusha who survived a nuclear attack and dedicated themselves to making sure no one else would ever suffer the same fate. In solidarity with them, and with all of the petitioners, I am now proud to add my name to this global call for the abolition of nuclear weapons.”
