In Pakistan, poor economic conditions and devastating floods which disrupted agriculture have meant that an additional 17 million people do not have enough food.

The World Food Programme (WFP) says that ordinary Pakistanis now pay twice as much for wheat, the staple food, than they did three years ago.

WFP’s Country Director in Pakistan is Wolfgang Harbinger.

“The number of food insecure people according to government’s own definition increased by 10 per cent over the last three years. About two-thirds of that increase was as a result of this declining economy and price inflation and one third could be directly attributed to the floods. The recent floods also meant a setback. It’s 17 million people additional under the food security poverty line.”
