UN Women launches with the support of UN Goodwill Ambassador Nicole Kidman, along with several other notable women. The new agency gives voice to women and girls worldwide. This came during the 55th session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women. Thousands of women were there to discuss issues and trade ideas including Olivia Nunez Orellana who runs a program in Mexico for the advancement of girls.

Cricket in Bangladesh teaches girls about HIV/AIDS

In Bangladesh, a country where HIV/AIDS are on the rise, the game of cricket along with some of it’s biggest players, are helping girls learn how to protect themselves from the deadly virus. The latest figures available suggest that only 8 percent of girls in the country have comprehensive knowledge of HIV/AIDS.

Eve Ensler opens a safe haven for Congo women recovering from rape

Up to 200,000 women have been raped in the Democratic Republic of Congo in the last 12 years. Now a new learning center in Bukavu, DRC has been set up to educate and empower women and girls who have been sexually abused. “City of Joy” is the brainchild of playwright , women’s activist and V-day founder Eve Ensler, but it’s being run by Congolese women.
