UN Women launches during Status of Women Conference

Launch of UN Women

The UN is celebrating the launch of UN Women – which is being described as a powerful new agency that gives voice to women and girls worldwide with a proposed budget of $500 million dollars. It was established in July by the General Assembly and merges four of the UN bodies that deal with women’s issues.

The launch event came during the 55th session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women, the global policy-making body dedicated exclusively to gender equality and the advancement of women. Discussions included women’s and girls’ access to education, especially in science and technology. One of the participants was Olivia Nunez Orellana who runs an institute in mexico for women and family policies. She told UN radio’s Jocelyne Sambira how boys must learn to treat girls as equals to help level the playing field.
