UN ready to support Egypt's "transition"

The United Nations says it is ready to support both political and economic transition in Egypt.

The North African country is facing a period of huge change after a country-wide demonstrations forced the long-serving president, Hosni Mubarak, to step down.


The UN’s Under Secretary General for Political Affairs, Lynn Pascoe, has been on a fact-finding mission to Egypt.

He says the UN can provide economic support and political assistance.

“There are of course, also elections coming up which are very important. It’s important that they seen to be free and fair. The UN as you know has a lot of experience around the world and is involved in some 50 countries this year to try and help on the technical side to try and make sure the elections are a success.”
