Violence is escalating in Abidjan, the capital of Côte d’Ivoire, as incumbent President Laurent Gbagbo continues to arm youth groups and forces loyal to him. Gbagbo remains steadfast in his refusal to step down after losing last year’s elections to opposition leader Alassane Ouattara. Gbagbo has also reportedly received three attack helicopters from Belarus in violation of an arms embargo against Côte d’Ivoire since 2004. A report categorically denied by the Belarus authorities. Meanwhile, the UN is increasingly in Gbagbo’s line of fire. Three blue helmets were shot at and wounded over the weekend. Jocelyne Sambira spoke to Kenneth Blackman, the Deputy Spokesperson for ONUCI in Abidjan.
