The visit was hosted by Irina Bokova the head of the UN Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and Bertrand Delanoe, Mayor of Paris.

Julie Walker reports.

United Nations Deputy Secretary-General Asha-Rose Migiro stood with Irina Bokova in homage before the memorial to victims at the camp where over one million people, mostly Jews were systematically murdered.

The liberation of the camp on 27 January 1945 is now commemorated as the International Day in Memory of the Victims of the Holocaust.

UNESCO says the visit to the camp is to combat denial of the Holocaust.

The Auschwitz-Birkenau camp was added to the list of UNESCO World Heritage sites in 1979.
