The fighting has reportedly claimed a number of lives, and led to the displacement of civilians.

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon is calling on both sides to exercise restraint and says the UN is ready to assist in peaceful efforts to end the dispute.

The Preah Vihear temple belongs to Cambodia according to a 1962 World Court ruling, but its main entrance lies in Thailand and both countries are claiming the small area around the temple as their own.
