Somalia, which is already suffering from conflict is "teetering on the brink of a much larger scale disaster" as a result of drought.

This warning comes from the head of United Nations humanitarian operations, Valerie Amos, who has just concluded a visit to Kenya and Somalia.

Ms. Amos says a significant number of people who are already in crisis, are in drought-affected areas that are difficult to access because they’re controlled by armed groups.

“Somalia, as you know, hosts one of the largest populations of displaced people in the world and is again teetering on the brink of a much larger scale disaster due to the threat of the country-wide drought. Malnutrition rates have increased in the last six months in southern Somalia and two million people, about 27 per cent of the population is in crisis.”
