Ban Ki-moon says in a statement he’s very concerned about reports of escalating violence and bloodshed, especially in Bahrain, Libya and Yemen and has voiced these concerns to leaders in the region. The Secretary-General has been on the phone encouraging leaders to listen to the desires of their people, and respond legitimately. He’s also pushing for freedom of the press and for communication services not to be disrupted.

On Sunday, Ban Ki-moon spoke with Bahrain’s King to express his concern about the protests and urge the government there to calm the volatile situation while exercising restraint. He also says the UN is prepared to help countries that want support.
